PART I: BEFORE THE BROADCAST
PERHAPS, MAYBE, POSSIBLY, MAY, MIGHT, COULD
BARANGKALI atau MUNGKIN = Perhaps [pəˈhæps/præps] atau Maybe [ˈmeɪbi]. Keduanya sama artinya.
Possibly [ˈpɒsəbli] Lebih menunjukkan keragu-raguan.
IWAN: Are there many German migrants in Brisbane?
CHRIS: I don’t know. Perhaps there are. Maybe there aren’t.
IWAN: Are there any Japanese migrants in Perth?
CHRIS: I don’t think so. But possibly there are.
MARGARET: Where’s Chris?
BERT: He isn’t in his room. Perhaps he and Iwan have gone out.
BERT: Where’s my hat?
MARGARET: Maybe you left it in the car.
MAY, MIGHT DAN COULD
(a) Untuk masa sekarang (kebiasaan) dan yang akan datang:
I’m not sure, but I think he MAY [meɪ] always go out on Saturdays = barangkali dia selalu pergi…
I’m not sure, but I think he MIGHT [maɪt] always go out on Saturdays = barangkali dia selalu pergi…
I’m not sure, but I think he COULD [kʊd] always go out on Saturdays = barangkali dia selalu pergi…
He may/might/could go out tomorrow = barangkali dia akan pergi…
Lihatlah beberapa contoh lain yang memakai may/might/could dengan arti mungkin:
IWAN: How often does Lucia’s grandmother go to English lessons?
CHRIS: Mamma? I’m not sure. She MAY go once a week or she MIGHT go twice a week.
BERT: The weather doesn’t look too good. It COULD rain.
MARGARET: Yes, it MIGHT rain tonight.
(b) Untuk waktu lampau:
He MAY HAVE [meɪ əv] GONE out yesterday = barangkali dia pergi…
He MIGHT HAVE [maɪt əv] GONE out yesterday = barangkali dia pergi…
He COULD HAVE [kʊd əv] GONE out yesterday = barangkali dia pergi…
Lihatlah beberapa contoh lain yang memakai bentuk lampau dari may/might/could:
CECILIA: How did Lucia know the news about Helen?
GUIDO: Chris MIGHT HAVE tOLD her. Or Iwan MAY HAVE tOLD her.
BERT: Did you switch the heater off?
CHRIS: No, I didn’t. Mum COULD HAVE switcHED it off. She said the room was too hot.
MAY, MIGHT, COULD adalah kata kerja pembantu.
MAY HAVE + p.p., MIGHT HAVE + p.p., COULD HAVE + p.p.
BENTUK NEGATIF DARI MAY DAN MIGHT
Bentuk negatif MAY ialah MAY NOT. (Tidak ada singkatannya.)
Bentuk negatif MIGHT ialah MIGHT NOT atau MIGHTN’T [ˈmaɪtənt].
They may not go = They might not go = They mightn’t go.
CATATAN: Bentuk negatif dari COULD/COULD HAVE tidak dipakai dalam pola ini.
IWAN: I wonder why Tony’s girlfriend wasn’t at the party.
