MENYATAKAN SETUJU

POSITIVE STATEMENTS
(KALIMAT BERITA POSITIP)

Lihatlah positive statements di bawah ini, dan perhatikan bagaimana kita menyetujuinya:

This film’s boring → YES, it is

These shoes are too big → YES, they are

He can sing very well → YES, he can

She eats too much → YES, she does

They go out a lot → YES, they do

PEDOMAN
Untuk menyetujui positive statement, kita pakai YES.

Berikut ini kalimat-kalimat dengan “question tags”. Kita menyetujuinya dengan cara yang sama:

It’s cold, isn’t it? → YES, it is

We’re late, aren’t we? → YES, we are

He can come tonight, can’t he? → YES, he can

It’ll be Friday tomorrow, won’t it? → YES, it will

You get up early, don’t you? → YES, I do

He goes to university, doesn’t he? → YES, he does

NEGATIVE STATEMENTS
(KALIMAT BERITA NEGATIP)

Lihatlah negative statements di bawah ini, dan perhatikan bagaimana kita menyetujuinya:

This coffee isn’t hot enough → NO, it isn’t (I agree: it isn’t hot enough)

Those aren’t your books → NO, they aren’t

This dress isn’t long enough → NO, it isn’t

My brother doesn’t eat much → NO, he doesn’t

They don’t play tennis well → NO, they don’t

PEDOMAN
Untuk menyetujui negative statement, kita pakai NO (karena kata kerja dalam jawaban kita bersifat negatip).

Berikut ini negative statements dengan “question tags”. Kita menyetujuinya dengan cara yang sama:

You aren’t sleepy, are you? → NO, I’m not

It isn’t late, is it? → NO, it isn’t

They aren’t going to town, are they? → NO, they aren’t

They don’t like coffee, do they? → NO, they don’t

He doesn’t ride a bike, does he? → NO, he doesn’t

MENYATAKAN SETUJU — lanjutan

Kadang-kadang kita tambahkan suatu “question tag” pada jawaban kita. Berikut ini beberapa contoh:

That book’s boring, isn’t it? Answer: Yes, it is, isn’t it?

That looks nice, doesn’t it? Answer: Yes, it does, doesn’t it?

They’re always late, aren’t they? Answer: Yes, they are, aren’t they?

It isn’t expensive, is it? Answer: No, it isn’t, is it?

She isn’t happy, is she? Answer: No, she isn’t, is she?

(Perhatikanlah bahwa “question tag” dalam jawaban tidak perlu dijawab.)

LAKUKANLAH LATIHAN DI ATAS DENGAN SEORANG TEMAN.

TOO (= juga, dipakai dalam positive statement)

Kalau suatu positive statement diikuti oleh suatu statement lain yang serupa, maka seringkali kata too ditambahkan pada akhir statement yang kedua. Perhatikan contoh-contoh pemakaian kata too berikut ini:

Long Statement:
Iwan likes Westerns. → (Chris likes Westerns too)
Lucia’s tired. → (I’m tired too)

Short Statement:
Iwan likes Westerns. → Chris does too.
Lucia’s tired. → I am too.
Lucia can speak Italian. → Paul can too.
They watched television last night. → We did too.

EITHER (= juga, dipakai dalam negative statement)

Kalau suatu negative statement diikuti oleh suatu negative statement lain yang serupa, maka kata either ditambahkan pada akhir kalimat yang kedua. Perhatikan contoh-contoh berikut ini:

Long Statement:
They didn’t play tennis. → (We didn’t play tennis either)
He doesn’t sing well. → (I don’t sing well either)

Short Statement:
They didn’t play tennis. → We didn’t either.
He doesn’t sing well. → I don’t either.
Lucia hasn’t been to Melbourne. → I haven’t either.
I can’t spend a lot of money. → They can’t either.
He isn’t tall. → I’m not either.

Beberapa ungkapan yang dipakai untuk menyatakan setuju:

That’s right = (Itu) benar.
HELEN: It’s a long time since we’ve seen Chris.
MRS SCOTT: That’s right. It’s about three weeks.

I couldn’t agree more = Saya sangat setuju.
JANE: Life in the country is easier than life in the city, isn’t it?
MR SCOTT: I couldn’t agree more.

You’re absolutely right = Saudara tepat sekali.
HELEN: Breakfast is a lovely meal, isn’t it?
MRS SCOTT: You’re absolutely right! I love it.

Certainly
JANE: It’s a beautiful day today.
DON: It certainly is! (= Betul demikian.)

MENYATAKAN TIDAK SETUJU

POSITIVE STATEMENTS

Lihatlah kalimat-kalimat di bawah ini, dan perhatikan bagaimana kita menyatakan tidak setuju:

We’re late → NO, we aren’t

He’s a lazy person → NO, he isn’t

You’re sleepy → NO, I’m not

He can speak Indonesian → NO, he can’t

They’ll arrive soon → NO, they won’t

PEDOMAN
Untuk menyatakan tidak setuju terhadap positive statement, kita pakai NO.

Berikut ini beberapa contoh dengan “question tags”. Kita menyatakan tidak setuju dengan cara yang sama.

Chris and Iwan are 21, aren’t they? → NO, they aren’t

You’re going to be there, aren’t you? → NO, I’m not

Bert likes Westerns, doesn’t he? → NO, he doesn’t

She went out, didn’t she? → NO, she didn’t

They’ll call in later, won’t they? → NO, they won’t

Iwan can play tennis, can’t he? → NO, he can’t

NEGATIVE STATEMENTS

Lihatlah kalimat-kalimat di bawah ini, dan perhatikan bagaimana kita menyatakan tidak setuju:

You didn’t switch the radio off → YES, I did (I disagree)

They didn’t enjoy the meal → YES, they did

I can’t come alone → YES, you can

She isn’t going to go → YES, she is

They can’t catch the bus → YES, they can

He didn’t eat his sandwiches, did he? → YES, he did

She doesn’t go to uni, does she? → YES, she does

You can’t come early, can you? → YES, I can

She won’t arrive tomorrow, will she? → YES, she will

MENYATAKAN TIDAK SETUJU — lanjutan

Berikut ini adalah beberapa ungkapan yang dipakai untuk menyatakan tidak setuju:

I don’t think… = Saya kira… tidak…
BETTY: It’s cold here.
SUE: I don’t think it is. (= Saya kira tidak demikian. Perhatikan bagian kalimat yang bersifat negatip.)

You may be right, but… = Saudara mungkin benar, tetapi…
BETTY: The shops in Melbourne are better than those in Sydney.
SUE: You may be right, but Sydney’s more interesting.

I’m afraid I don’t agree = Maaf, tetapi saya tidak sependapat.
BETTY: I think Melbourne’s more interesting than Sydney.
SUE: I’m afraid I don’t agree.

I don’t think that’s right = Saya kira itu tidak benar.
BETTY: Buses are always more crowded than trains.
SUE: I don’t think that’s right.

CONVERSATION (PERCAKAPAN)

BETTY: Gosh, it’s hot today!

SUE: It certainly is, but I like hot weather better than cold weather.

BETTY: I’m afraid I don’t agree. It makes me tired.

SUE: You may be right, but in winter I always get a cold.

BETTY: I do too, but I still think winter’s better. Sydney hasn’t got a very cold winter, of course. I come from England, you know, and it’s very cold there during the winter.

SUE: That’s right. It snows a lot, doesn’t it?

BETTY: Yes, it does. And it often rains, and I don’t like that.

SUE: I don’t either, but I think it’s going to rain tonight.

BETTY: Yes, I think you’re right. I did the washing this morning and it always rains when I do the washing!

C. Tambahkanlah suatu kalimat lain pada tiap-tiap kalimat berikut. Pakailah too atau either.
