Pelajaran 65 – Cerita dari Australia Keluarga Baxter

Minggu ini siaran kita agak berbeda dari biasanya karena tidak berbentuk sebagai pelajaran, akan tetapi merupakan cerita tentang suatu keluarga Australia. Dalam siaran akan dipakai sejumlah kata-kata baru, tetapi kata-kata baru tersebut dapat saudara pelajari lebih dahulu sebelum saudara mendengarnya.

Untuk membantu agar saudara dapat lebih memahami dan menyukai kisah kami, dalam buku ini akan kami berikan beberapa petikan dari siaran tersebut — jadi bukan siaran itu seluruhnya, tetapi beberapa bagian saja. Bacalah petikan-petikan tersebut sebelum saudara mengikuti siaran, dan pelajarilah semua kata dan ungkapan baru yang terdapat di dalamnya.

Kali ini, bacalah singkatan cerita tersebut dalam bahasa Inggris. Kata-kata baru yang tidak diberi terjemahan, dapat saudara temukan artinya dalam daftar perbendaharaan bagian-bagian lain buku ini.

THE STORY

This isn’t a true story, but it could easily happen in Australia. As you know, Australians are very fond of sport. They like playing sport and they like watching sport too. Today we’ll listen to the story of John and Mary Baxter. They live in a small country town called Newell, in the State of Victoria. Their daughter Barbara goes to the local High School. Barbara is thirteen.

First, we listen to Barbara and her mother. Barbara has won a race for fifteen-year-olds at school and she is very excited. And Jim Hayes is excited too. He’s the sports master at the school. He comes to visit Barbara’s parents. He says Barbara is a very fast runner and he thinks she’s going to be a champion. He invites them to see her run next week.

Later, Mary and John watched Barbara run, and she won again. Afterwards the Headmaster (= Kepala Sekolah), Mr Carson, invited them to have tea with him and Jim Hayes. They told Barbara what she had to do to become (= untuk menjadi) a great runner.

Barbara started training with Jim Hayes. She won a lot of races. Then she entered in the inter-school sports. But she fell over in her race, and another girl won. One of the girls at the school thought Barbara was getting conceited, so she was glad Barbara had lost the race.

*enter (in) = ikut dalam (pertandingan). (Biasanya enter tidak diikuti oleh kata depan.)

Two years passed. Barbara was still winning races, but she was working hard at school too. She won a race in the interstate sports and the Mayor of Newell said he wanted her to go to the Pacific Games. All the people in the town helped to raise money to send Barbara to the Games. There was a big farewell party for her. The Mayor made a speech and so did Barbara.

Barbara ran in two races in the Pacific Games and won both races. She broke a world record for the hundred metres race. When she came back there was a big procession (= pawai) through the streets of Newell. Jim Hayes said he wanted Barbara to continue her training. He said the Olympic Games were in two years’ time and he was sure Barbara would get in the team.

BARBARA: Mum! Mum! Where are you?

MARY: I’m in the kitchen.

BARBARA: Mum! I won! I won!

MARY: What? What did you win?

BARBARA: I won a race! I won the hundred metres!

MARY: Oh, very nice, dear. Now come out to the kitchen and have a glass of milk and a biscuit.

BARBARA: I don’t think you understand, Mum.

MARY: Hmm? Oh, yes, I do. You’ve won a race.

BARBARA: I won a race! I’ve never been interested in running before. I’ve always played tennis. Well… today I ran in a race — and I won!

MARY: Yes, dear. Now, what about your homework?

BARBARA: Mum, you still don’t understand. I’m only thirteen and I ran in a race for fifteen-year-olds, and I won.

MARY: Oh… I see. That is exciting. I didn’t know you were good at running.

BARBARA: I didn’t either. And Mr Hayes said…

MARY: Who’s Mr Hayes?

BARBARA: He’s the sports master. He said I could run again next week and he said he’d never seen anyone of my age run so fast and he said…

MARY: Calm down now, Barbara. Drink your milk.

MR CARSON: Mr Hayes and I think you’re going to be a great runner. A very great runner.

JOHN: Do you?

JIM HAYES: She must go to bed early every night.

MR CARSON: And we want her to have plenty of exercise.

JIM HAYES: She wants new running shoes.

MR CARSON: And she must have special food.

JIM HAYES: And a lot of training.

MR CARSON: Not so much time for boyfriends, eh?

JIM HAYES: She won’t have so much time to study.

MR CARSON: Jim will be her special coach.

JIM HAYES: Yes, I’ll be her special coach.

MR CARSON: She’s going to be a great runner.

JIM HAYES: She’s going to be the best runner in Australia!
